Charles Mervin Walker
Body

Charles Mervin Walker was born at his home on Queen Hill near Weir, Texas to Charlie and Bertha Walker on June 25, 1931. He went to elementary school in Weir and attended high school in Georgetown. Many days he rode his horse Dandy to elementary school.

Mervin married Grace Evelyn Eulenfeld on January 10, 1953, and in 1970 they welcomed their daughter, Charlotte. Grace passed away in 1998 and on August 11, 2000, he married Tommy Louise Thornton Sawyer.

Mervin farmed and ranched in the Weir and Jonah area all of his life. In addition to farming, he was very involved in various aspects of the community. In 1972, Mervin, along with a group of men from the Jonah community founded the Jonah Water Corporation. He was a founding member and served on the Board of Directors for many years. Now called Jonah Water SUD, this corporation continues to be in operation and serves thousands of families in Williamson County.

The Weir Community Cemetery has always held an important place in Mervin’s heart. This is the cemetery where his parents and young sisters are laid to rest. In 1976, the Weir Cemetery Association was formed with five directors, where Mervin sat as president for close to 30 years. Mervin and his wife, Tommy, were instrumental in getting the Weir Community Cemetery named a Historic Texas Cemetery by the Texas Historical Commission and a historical marker was placed in 2002.

Weir is a small railroad town that was founded in 1903. Being born and raised in this community led to Mervin’s passion of working to get the town incorporated in the late ‘80’s. Following voter approval, Mervin became the first Mayor of Weir in 1987 and held the position of Mayor until 2020. Except for his family, nothing made him prouder than the fact that he led the City of Weir for 33 years. This community was always his pride and joy!

Mervin is preceded in death by his parents, Bertha Keese and Charlie Walker; wife, Grace Evelyn Eulenfeld Walker; twin sister who died at birth, Claudine Mertice Walker; sister who died as a baby, Merle Walker; sisters, Vergie Walker Johnson, Dorothy Walker Swenson and Opal Walker Sundbeck.

Mervin is survived by his wife, Tommy Louise Walker; daughter, Charlotte Davis (Duane); granddaughters, Natalie Mask (Collin) and Macie Davis; stepsons, Bernard Sawyer, Tim Sawyer (Denise), Dennis Sawyer (Jayne). In addition to these loved ones, Mervin is survived by loving nephews, nieces, cousins, and step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Pallbearers will be James Sawyer, Jason Sawyer, Ryan Sawyer, Russell Sawyer, Keith Sawyer and Collin Mask.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Weir Cemetery Association.

A visitation with the family will be held on Thursday, October 12, 2023, at The Gabriels Funeral Chapel in Georgetown from 6-8 p.m. The funeral service will take place the following afternoon at 2 p.m., also at The Gabriels Funeral Chapel. The burial will immediately follow at Taylor City Cemetery.
