Holiday Inn is based on the 1942 film of the same name. Music and lyrics by Irving Berlin combined with Fred Astaire’s fancy footwork and Bing Crosby’s casual crooning made the movie a hit. It received a 1943 Academy Award for Best Original Song, “White Christmas.” The name of the Holiday Inn hotel chain was inspired by the film, as was the 1954 movie White Christmas.

The musical opened on Broadway in 2016, after premiering at the Goodspeed Opera House in 2014. Irving Berlin’s Holiday Inn, the musical, opened at the Georgetown Palace Theatre November 19.

Performers Jim, Ted and Lila are a popular song-and-dance team. Things in show biz get messy and love lives are hit and miss in this tale of trials and triumphs. Steve Quinn plays good natured singer Jim and Braden Tanner portrays playboy dancer Ted. Mr. Quinn and Mr. Tanner are well cast as competitive frenemies. Katya Welch digs deep as diva dancer and singer Lila and is excellent in the role.

Jim’s heart is broken by Lila. He leaves the lights of the big city to convert a rustic farmhouse into the Holiday Inn featuring live entertainment. Jim is assisted in his efforts by handywoman Louise. Dynamo Suzanne Orzech deftly delivers lots of laughs in the comic relief role. Jim’s new romantic interest is relatable and sincere Linda. Marina Garcia is top-notch as the local school teacher.

The plot is mostly a way to introduce Irving Berlin’s fantastic song and dance numbers as the inn celebrates a full year of holidays. Berlin introduced “White Christmas” and it became a runaway hit. Other Berlin holiday tunes include “Let’s Start the New Year Right,” “Easter Parade” and “Plenty to Be Thankful For.”

Costume designer Aaron Kubacak expertly decks out ensembles in flattering 1940s fashion for a festive romp through Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s and Easter. Sizzling hot costumes turned up the temp for “Heat Wave.” Gifted Justin Dam outdid himself as scenic designer. The bright lights of show business contrast nicely with the cozy Connecticut country inn.

Choreographer Jesee Smart and Music Director Nick Xitco showcased the multi talented cast. The wealth of nostalgic songs and high energy hoofing was delivered with glee to the delight of the audience. Playful back and forth precision between tap dancers was especially entertaining. Mr. Tanner pulled out all the bells and whistles in a red hot tap to “Say It With Firecrackers.” Marina Garcia's smooth sparkling voice was especially delightful in “Nothing More to Say.”

The feel-good crowd pleaser is directed by talented Palace veteran Kristen Rogers. Ms.Rogers is the director of education at the Palace Theatre. Her level of expertise was evident on opening night. Excellent casting creates picture-perfect moments.
