October is National Arts and Humanities Month

City celebrates with sponsored art events

A slew of arts events are coming this month as Georgetown launches its Month of the Arts.

October has been National Arts and Humanities Month since 1993, according to the National Today website, but originated as a weeklong event by nonprofit Americans for the Arts in 1985.

The month encourages U.S. citizens to better incorporate art into their daily lives and to recognize art’s impact on the world.

Georgetown will celebration with these city sponsored events:

Brown Bag Luncheon

Noon, October 13 Georgetown Public Library

Sponsored by the Georgetown Arts and Culture program, this quarterly event focuses on how the city’s Hotel Occupancy Tax can support community arts and culture initiatives. Ann Graham, the executive director for arts advocacy organization Texans for the Arts, will present at the event.

After the presentation, audience members can discuss and learn about local programs. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lunch.

South Main Arts District ribbon cutting and Autumn Art Stroll

4-8 p.m., October 20 Downtown Georgetown Cultural District

The city’s South Main Arts District will officially open October 20 during the Autumn Art Stroll.

The South Main Arts District is a new green space located between Founder’s Park and the Grace Heritage Center downtown. Previously a parking lot, the site has been under construction since July. The ribbon cutting will take place at 5:30 p.m.

The Art Stroll includes art experiences — including children’s activities, live music and art exhibits — throughout the Downtown Georgetown Cultural District. Winners of the 2022 Georgetown Sculpture Tour will also be announced at 4 p.m. at the Shotgun House, 801 West Street, during the event.

Imagine a Day Without Water

All day, October 20 Downtown Georgetown

Georgetown’s Water Conservation team hosts its inaugural Imagine a Day Without Water event on October 20.

“Water plays a vital role in our daily lives, and this event is designed to bring awareness to what life would be like without water,” the city wrote in a statement.

Throughout the day, businesses on the Square will hand out freebies and people can enter raffles for a chance to win themed giveaways.

Visitors can also look at 10 rain barrels decorated by local artists as part of the city’s Painted Rain Barrel Project. Each rain barrel will be auctioned off, with proceeds going toward water conservation education and outreach in local schools.

South Main Arts Festival

All day, October 22 South Main Arts District

The inaugural South Main Arts Festival will include booths from juried artists, a yarn bomb installation, food trucks, an outdoor theatrical performance, ribbon dancers and more. Live musical begins at 5 p.m., with music by Texas Commission on the Arts Touring Roster Artist Sue Foley.
