Enjoy Disney’s ‘Frozen’ this winter on the Palace stage

The Georgetown Palace Theatre opened Disney’s Frozen November 21 on the historic Springer stage under the direction of Dr. Kristen Rogers.

“For the first time in forever, experience the musical phenomenon that has taken the world by storm,” Palace promotions state. “Full of magic, humor, and a stunning musical score, Frozen is a powerful tale of sisterhood, acceptance, and finding the real meaning of true love.”

The musical is based on the 2013 Academy Award-winning animated film. Frozen is the highest-grossing animated film of all time and the song “Let It Go” became a global phenomenon. The theatre production includes the film’s beloved characters and songs, along with new music.

The popularity of the film creates very high audience expectations for a theatre production. Disney movies are enchanting, immersive and unforgettable. The Palace set design, lighting, costumes, choreography, music and all other back stage efforts enhance the storytelling to create a magical experience on stage.

The story centers on the relationship between princess sisters Elsa and Anna. Elsa has magical powers she does not know how to control. After inheriting the throne, Elsa inadvertently causes the kingdom of Arendelle to become frozen in eternal winter. She must show true love to save the day.

Actress Lauren MacLeod as Anna and Sara Teeter as Elsa are well-cast as the princess stars. Ms. MacLeod portrays the extrovert, awkward but lovable sister with humor and sass. Ms. Teeter’s character is cautious and serious, has secrets to keep and the big responsibility of becoming queen. Ms. MacLeod and Ms. Teeter bring fine acting, lovely voices, passion and glamour to the starring roles.

The princesses are also portrayed in their youth. The roles of young Elsa and young Anna are double cast. Sisters Brynn and Ella Schneekloth portrayed Elsa and Anna at the production I attended.

Their mother, Christine Saunders, recalled their excitement at being cast.

“Brynn and Ella were, like most little girls, obsessed with Frozen. I have fond memories of them in full costume dancing and singing around the house,” she said. “They were so excited to get cast, and honestly they didn’t expect to get cast together.”

Ms. Saunters reflected on the experience of seeing her girls playing the role of sisters who are so well known.

“Let’s face it, being sisters isn’t always easy, but watching that sisterly dynamic play out on stage is so very special and a once in a lifetime opportunity for the girls and we are so very grateful to Georgetown Palace Theater for it,” she said. “It has been a big commitment, a ton of work, but they are loving it.”

I attended the musical with my 9-year-old granddaughter, Greta Berg, and her father, Kevin Berg. Our three generation trio brought different viewpoints.

“I really liked the costumes in the play,” Greta said. “I especially liked Elsa’s costume change during ‘Let It Go.’ My favorite characters were the younger versions of Elsa and Anna. I had so much fun with my grandma and my Dad.”

Greta was also excited about snowflake wands used by kids in the audience to help save the kingdom.

Kevin came to the production with a background in live theatre and a bachelor of fine arts in digital filmmaking.

“The costumes, choreography and stage effects were incredible, and the music and vocal performances were all outstanding,” Kevin said. “I was most impressed by how well the show was adapted from the film. You don’t need to have seen it to appreciate the craft and artistry that went into the stage version.”

The storyline and music were all new to this baby boomer grandmother. I was thoroughly enchanted. Frozen transcends generational divides to be enjoyed by all ages. To quote Walt Disney, “Laughter is timeless, imagination has no age, dreams are forever.”

The regional premiere of Disney’s Frozen at the Palace Theatre runs through February 1, 2026. Check dates and times online at www.georgetownpalace.org
