Mikey V’s new food truck debuts to feed flood victims
After the July 5 floods, Mikey V’s Tacos On The Square stepped in to support those affected by providing food and raising money.
“We just wanted to give back any way that we could,” said Tanya Valencia, the business’s co-owner. “That’s the way that we could give back right away.”
On July 8, the hot sauce business and taco restaurant brought its new food truck to Barking Armadillo Brewing & Coffeehouse for a fundraiser benefiting the Georgetown Beard Club.
Mikey V’s sold out of tacos within the first hour and a half. Staff members were sent to retrieve more ingredients from the restaurant on the Square — and the truck sold out again.
Taking initial steps
When Michael and Tanya Valencia, the owners of Mikey V’s, first heard about the flooding on Sunday, they sprang into action.
“We immediately put shoes on and went to the taco shop and we started making tacos for people— making phone calls like, ‘Who needs food?’ Let's go,” Mr. Valencia said.
Mikey V’s posted on Facebook, inviting anyone who had been displaced to come to the restaurant for food.
“No questions asked,” Mr. Valencia said. “We just want to love you and support you the way that you have supported us the last how many years.”
“[We] just feel really blessed that we've been given so much from our community,” Ms. Valencia said.
After the post, the restaurant received messages from produce suppliers and customers wanting to donate money.
“That's our Georgetown community— everybody comes together to help each other out,” Mr. Valencia said.
In the days following the flood, Mikey V’s delivered meals to first responders at City Hall, provided breakfast and lunch to the Williamson County 911 operations center, and fed staff at the Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter.
“We finished it off with doing the animal shelter people, because a lot of those guys get overlooked,” Mr. Valencia said. “They're working hard, just like the 911 operators.”
New food truck schedule
Mikey V’s food truck will be parked at Barking Armadillo Brewing & Coffeehouse every Tuesday night from 4-8 p.m. through July. Beginning in August, the truck will be there on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
