The Flower Box reaches Golden Anniversary

The Flower Box florist will celebrate making Georgetown a little more beautiful with their bouquets for 50 years on October 13.

The flower shop, located at 910 Martin Luther King Jr. Street, creates bouquets for every aspect of human life, spanning from birth, death and weddings.

“Flowers are a timeless, universal language from ancient times to now,” owner Deniese O’Neill said. “They’re a way of telling people how you feel. They show everything from love to sympathy, any emotion you want to express.”

The Flower Box opened in 1972 under the ownership of Patricia Taylor. Susie Ramos, who started at the store as a manager, eventually purchased the shop from Ms. Taylor in 1975 and ran it for decades, while establishing the business, and herself, as essential parts of the Georgetown business community.

In 2003, Ms. O’Neill stepped in as store manager after moving to Central Texas from the Panhandle area. Eventually, Ms. O’Neill followed the path set by Ms. Ramos and bought The Flower Box for herself.

Growing up with a florist as a mother, Ms. O’Neill said she gets as much joy now creating bouquets for the community as she did when she first started.

“If a family comes in and talks to me, I try to incorporate their life into the arrangements,” she said. “We love to create what the heart wants to say.”

While supply chain issues have caused problems with importing flowers from California, Colombia and Ecuador, she said that demand for floral arrangements was high during the pandemic.

“People weren’t able to see loved ones, so they were sending special arrangements to each other instead,” she said.

Ms. O’Neill plans to work at the shop as long as she can and hopes to pass it on to her children one day.

“I hope it keeps going strong and people enjoy being able to create special moments,” she said.

To celebrate 50 years creating bouquets for the city, the Flower Box will celebrate all day on October 13 with discounts, food and refreshments, floral arrangements outside for photos, live entertainment starting at 4 p.m. and a ribbon cutting with the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce at 5:15 p.m.
