Anthony Bernard “Tony” Thyen

Anthony Bernard “Tony” Thyen was born July 25, 1946, in Washington, Indiana, the son of Lois Judy Krodel Thyen and Bernard Anthony Thyen. He passed from this life at the age of 76 on October 4, 2022, in his home in Georgetown.

Tony grew up in Jasper, Indiana, moving with his family to Lexington, Kentucky, at the age of 16. He graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1968, where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. In 1973, he received a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Southern Methodist University. He furthered his education at the University of Houston with a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree in 1978.

Upon graduation from the University of Kentucky Tony married Mary Ann Heller and they moved from Lexington to Dallas where he began his career as a Mechanical Engineer with LTV Aerospace. In 1974, they moved from Dallas to Houston with their young son, Andy, where Tony was employed by Schlumberger until 1987, initially working as a Mechanical Engineer and later as Operations Manager. While in Houston, three more children, Adam, Katie, and Peter, were born to complete their family. Tony retired from Alcoa Fasteners in Waco in 2012 where he had served as Plant Manager, Vice President of Engineering, and Director of Health and Safety.

After 40 years of marriage, Mary Ann passed away in 2009. While this loss left a void in their family, retirement brought additional unexpected change and much happiness to Tony’s life. In 2014, he met Norma Sue Reed, and in 2015 they were married with their families present to jointly celebrate this union. Among Tony and Norma Sue’s pleasures was enjoyment of their large family, travel, church, and social activities.

Joy in Tony’s life came from his faith, family, friends, reading, and love of sports. Participating in various sports including football, baseball, and diving were important parts of Tony’s youth and teen years. During adult years he played tennis recreationally, but he especially thrived on watching his children and later his grandchildren participate in their athletic activities. Tony enjoyed all kinds of sports but was especially faithful to follow his beloved University of Kentucky basketball team.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann; his parents; and two sisters, Judy Kay Murphy and Sylvia Ann Carson. Surviving family members include his wife, Norma Sue Thyen; son, Dr. Andrew Bernard “Andy” Thyen (Danielle); son, Adam Heller Thyen (Nikki); daughter, Catherine Elizabeth “Katie” Haas (Dudley); and son, Peter Allen Thyen (Kara); grandchildren, Brady Thyen, Tanner Thyen, Bella Thyen,HarperHaas, Emmy Thyen, Charlie Haas, Lily Thyen, Trainor Thyen, Hugh Haas, and Calvin Thyen; also surviving him are members of Norma Sue’s family including daughters, Reagan Roseberry Steppe (Peter) and Brooke Roseberry Zimmerman (Neil); as well as grandchildren Spencer Steppe, Rhett Steppe, Lila Rose Steppe, Hank Steppe, Clifton Zimmerman, and Fez Zimmerman; other survivors include his sister, Marilyn Morrow (Len); brothers and sisters in law; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at Lakeshore Funeral Home on Monday evening starting at 4:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Jerome Catholic Church in Woodway with interment immediately following at Oakwood Cemetery.
