Georgetown prayer garden great for reflections

There are many things I find comforting at Our Lady of the Rosary Cemetery and Prayer Gardens in Georgetown, east of State Highway 130. The burial ground is impeccably-manicured. Each spring, assuming rain has been helpful, the site is adorned with wildflowers. A walking trail maintained year-round is full of flowers and native plants.

It’s the little pond that keeps me coming back. The small water source is along a nature trail in an area known as St. Theresa Sanctuary. A sign tells us it was dedicated in memory of Rebecca Kress, the work of an Eagle Scout project completed by D.J. Roper in 2012.

The pond can be viewed as you stroll the grounds, but includes a viewing deck, complete with chairs. It’s quiet here. Birds and dragonflies are abundant. The water gleams as the day’s last light glides across its surface. I’m always flummoxed that this place is just east of the highway. If you take your mind off the lapping water, you might notice some traffic noise. Somehow, it doesn’t seem to intrude. You get lost in its presence. At least I do.

Through the years when stopping by the pond for stress-reduction, I’ve seen few others around. Maybe it’s because people think of it as only a cemetery.

It’s much more than a cemetery. The site is at the end of Berry Lane, just off East University Avenue. It might be surrounded by rapid growth, but you won’t know it when you’re there.
