Sun City Women’s Golf Association crowns champion
The Sun City Women’s Golf Association 18-hole group has crowned its champion for 2022 after a rigorous 54 holes of golf last week. It mandated a test on all three championship courses between October 10 and 13.
The test began on the original Sun City course designed by World Golf Hall of Fame member Billy Casper, which debuted in 1996.
The second challenge occurred on Casper’s second course, White Wing. This course was designed over and around Berry Creek and debuted in 2000.
Finally, the last test of golfing endurance for the women occurred on Cowan Creek. This is the newest course that was designed by Texas Gary Stephenson that opened in 2008. All are par-72 courses.
Susan Schroeder shot a potent three-round total of 236 for the championship.
That clipped Reinette Steele’s 238 and Catherine Daniel’s 259 for the gross title honors.
Pirates play the Quarry
Two names to watch as the Southwestern Pirates golfing season unfolds are both Texans — Christian Rodriguez from Houston and Ryleigh Erickson from McAllen.
Christian and Ryleigh, plus fellow teammates, all participated in the Alamo City Classic over the Quarry Golf Club in San Antonio October 18 and 19.
Rodriguez fired rounds of 72, 68 and 69 for 209. That meant a third place finish over the Quarry’s distinctive layout.
The Pirate men came in third, trailing the host Trinity University and Mary Hardin-Baylor. The Pirates were only a single stroke behind UMHB among the nine teams in the field.
Other results for the men were Nicholas Hoisington (212), Bryce Stiemert (220), Rex Newsom and Matthew Peesker (224).
The women, meanwhile, came in second, also trailing the host Trinity University over the 5,792-yard course. The Quarry for both teams is a par-71 layout.
Erickson registered rounds of 75-76 for 151, good for third place honors.
Madison Miller from Cedar Park posted 155; other Pirate results were Isabel Montelongo (160), Linsey Garza (162) and Katherine Montgomery (164).
Berry Creek championships
Berry Creek Country Club will take the spotlight this weekend as the men and women’s club championships for 2022 will be awarded.
The championship flights will cover 54 holes and tee off on Friday. Meanwhile, the net flight competitors will play 36 holes over two days starting on Saturday.
Steve Jorde captured his first Berry Creek championship in last year’s competition.
He posted 234, clipping Ryan Tull and Chris Thoms by one stroke. Tull and Thomas both finished with 235.
In the ladies competition, Jeri Pack won the title with 262. That was good for a three-stroke victory.
Dorothy Lovett registered 265 for second and Susie Teitelbaum had 269 for third.
