Wilco, Georgetown to collaborate on new mural

Mural will mark 175th birthday for both the county and city

County Commissioners voted November 15 to move forward with a celebratory mural in honor of the 175th birthday celebration of both Williamson County and the City of Georgetown.

The mural could be installed on the north side of the county building at 901 South Austin Avenue, which houses the county tax office and internal auditor’s office. This site was selected for its contribution to Williamson County’s development.

The court heard from Connie Odom, the county’s director of communications and media relations, and a member of one of the committees organizing the mural effort.

The county has budgeted $50,000 to go toward all 175th birthday celebration events. The mural project is able to pull from this fund.

According to the presentation, the City of Georgetown can contribute up to $2,000 in paints and materials for this project. The committee also plans to bring in sponsors to help with costs.

The next step will be inviting design entries from artists for review.

The mural design should be an interpretation of the history of Williamson County and the City of Georgetown. The Arts and Culture Board — in collaboration with Williamson County — will select an artist commission for the mural design and installation. If approved, a mural easement agreement with the City of Georgetown will be placed on a future agenda for consideration.

The county is planning a kick off event for the birthday celebration on March 10 and 11 of next year. A community painting event may be set for that time. Residents would be allowed to help paint a portion of the mural assigned to them in a “paint by numbers” style, according to the county. A public unveiling would take place during the spring Art Walk.
