Recycle holiday string lights this year
Georgetown residents can recycle their out-of-order string lights for free this holiday season through a partnership between the city and Texas Disposal Systems until January 31.
Residents can drop off string lights at the following collection stations:
• City of Georgetown Collection and Transfer Station, 250 WL. Walden Road
• Georgetown Municipal Complex, 300-1 Industrial Avenue
• Georgetown Public Library 402 West Eighth Street
Sun City residents can also drop lights off at the Cowan Creek Pavilion, 1433 Cool Spring Way.
String lights cannot be recycled in residential or commercial bins because they damage sorting machines at recycling centers. The program is limited to lights. Yard art, inflatables and other holiday lighting will not be accepted at the collection stations.
According to a city press release, Georgetown was the first Central Texas city to offer this service, having launched the program in December 2017. Residents recycled more than 4,800 pounds of holiday lights last year.
Additional information about the program and other recycling services is available online at recycle.georgetown.org.
