Volunteers give century-old structure new life

 

In an old building a few miles east of Georgetown — in rooms where boisterous children once learned to read and do sums — shoppers today are found gingerly browsing thrift-store goods. 

The building’s foundation is shifting. Its old wood floors creak and sag. The central hall is dimly lit. Only one room is cooled by a window air-conditioner.
