VFW announces scholarship winners in annual essay contests
Georgetown High School sophomore Joseph Bustos accepts his $1,000 scholarship prize from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8587 Commander John McLeskey and Victoria Wren, from the Post’s Auxiliary. Joseph’s recorded essay in the VFW’s Voice of Democracy competition was selected over 20 other entries and went on to win second-place at the five-county district level.
“Education,” G.K. Chesterton said, “is the soul of a society, as it passes from one generation to the next.”
Chesterton hailed from Victorian England, but 21st century Texans from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8587 might appreciate what he meant. Every year, 8587 joins VFW Posts nationwide in sponsoring essay contests that encourage students to express themselves on topics involving patriotic value…
