Election Day is Tuesday; Here's how you can vote in Williamson County

The Texas primary election is set for March 3, and early voting ended Thursday, February 26.

This election includes federal, state and county-level positions, including governor, state senator, Texas state representatives, state judges, and county judge and commissioner races.

As a primary, the election is being run and organized by the county’s Democratic and Republican parties. Texas holds “open primaries,” which means registered voters can choose which party’s ballot to vote on, regardless of their own registered party. Voters can not, however, vote in both primaries.

Candidates who receive at least 50 percent of the vote in their races will represent their parties in the November General Election. For primary races where the top candidate receives less than 50 percent of the vote, a runoff election will be held in late May.

Election Day voting information

Residents who plan to vote on election day Tuesday, March 3, will have to do so at their assigned polling location based on the precinct they live in.

This change is to accommodate a request by the Williamson County Republican Party to remove the option for county-wide voting. Under state law, involved parties must agree on how to run primaries, including voting locations, meaning the change also forces Democrats in the county to vote only at their neighborhood voting locations.

The ultimate goal is to have a “successful primary election with voters that are confident that their ballot is confidential, that their ballot is counted and that their ballot matters.” said Republican Party Chair Michelle Evans during the Jan. 27 Commissioners Court meeting.

“We’re doing what we can as the Republican Party to achieve that in the method that we feel is best for our party,” Ms. Evans said.

The changes have created more work for election officials, Williamson County Election Administrator Bridgette Escobedo told the Sun this week, as it requires more polling locations than typically used. This also results in an increase in needed supplies, voting equipment and election workers.

During early voting, which was held countywide over the past two weeks, there were 21 listed polling places. For election day, however, elections officials have to increase their staff number to cover all the precincts, with dedicated places depending on party and precinct number.

In Williamson County, there are 177 total voting precincts, with the Republicans having 79 and the Democrats having 46. This means that some precincts have been combined into one location. There will be 55 electron day locations for Republicans 42 election day locations for Democrats.

“We do not have enough to cover precinct-level voting,” Ms. Escobedo said. “We’ve had to modify our processes to
provide coverage in all of the areas.”

Because of the new rules, Ms. Escobedo said the county has worked to inform the public through news media, the county website and its social media pages.

Election workers and officials are also prepared to redirect voters who show up at the wrong location and to inform them about their assigned voting location.

“The most common concern is confusion surrounding the change for the primary and primary runoff,” Ms. Escobedo said.
To determine which precinct you belong to, visit https://apps.wilcotx.gov/elections/voterlookup and type in your address. This should give residents their specific ballot and their precinct number. Then, check the list of polling locations to determine which voting location you’ve been assigned.

You can also visit www.wilcotx.gov/190/maps to view a map of voting precincts and congressional district lines.

Election Day voting locations

Voting locations on March 3 are specified by precinct and party. Voters are only eligible to vote at their specific, assigned voting location based on precinct number. All locations will be open March 3 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
