On Saturday, there was an officer-involved shooting on the Square in Georgetown. A large law enforcement presence is still in the area, and Georgetown Police are still investigating.
Some businesses were locked down temporarily after the shooting, and most areas downtown are being blocked.
Georgetown PD posted this update online at 2:50 p.m. explaining the situation:
The Georgetown Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred in the 100 block of W. 7th Street on the Georgetown Square.
There is no active shooter and there is no ongoing threat to the public related to this incident. We are aware of information circulating on social media suggesting there was an active shooter on the Square. That information is incorrect.
The information we are providing at this time is preliminary and may change as investigators conduct interviews, review evidence, and develop a more complete understanding of what occurred. Because of the concern created by the active-shooter rumors, we believe it is important to share what we know as quickly as possible.
At approximately 12:49 p.m., Georgetown Police officers were dispatched to the area for a suspicious person investigation after callers reported a male subject jumping on vehicles and behaving erratically.
Officers arrived at approximately 12:55 p.m. and located the subject. Based on the preliminary investigation, a violent struggle occurred between the subject and officers. During that struggle, the subject attempted to take a holstered handgun from one of the officers. Another officer subsequently discharged their firearm, striking the subject.
Officers and emergency medical personnel provided assistance, and the subject was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
The involved officers are currently being interviewed, and investigators are continuing to gather evidence to determine the complete sequence of events. For that reason, we want to emphasize that these details are preliminary and should not be considered a final account of the incident.
At this time, we are not releasing the identity of the deceased or the names of the involved officers. Additional information regarding their identities will be released when appropriate and after required notifications have been completed.
The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting with assistance from the Georgetown Police Department Criminal Investigations Division.
We recognize that an incident like this, particularly in a highly visible area such as the Georgetown Square, can create concern in our community. Again, this was not an active-shooter incident, and there is no ongoing threat to the public related to this incident.
