Albert Monroe Provence, Jr., a man of boundless curiosity, adventurous spirit, and unwavering determination, passed away on February 8, 2024, at the age of 88. He was born on August 4, 1935, in Ardmore, Oklahoma, to a family of migrant farm workers, who later relocated and established roots in California. He is survived by his wife Donna, his three children and three stepchildren, ten grandchildren and one great grandchild and a large extended family.
He held his family in the highest regard, showing unwavering loyalty and dedication. This commitment extended beyond his relatives to mentoring young individuals across various aspects of life, fostering lifelong connections with those he supported.
During his youth in Watsonville, California, he was a member of Boy Scouts achieving the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. Excelling in football during his high school years, he became the first high school graduate in his family, earning a full scholarship to play football and earn his college diploma at University of Southern California. There he joined the Sigma Chi fraternity and later served as its President. Through hard work and dedication, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to found Poly Enterprises, a successful plastics manufacturing company in Southern California.
Outside of work, he found immense joy in fishing, a past-time he shared with generations of family members. He was drawn to the challenges and tranquility of deep-sea excursions and the artful relaxation of fly fishing. Spending countless hours on the water, he found solace and excitement in the pursuit of elusive marine treasures, fostering a deep connection to nature.
He also had a keen appreciation for the finer things in life, particularly wine and travel. A true connoisseur, he savored the complexities of each glass and shared his appreciation with those around him. Al and Donna shared many great adventures traversing the globe and collecting a diverse array of wines to adorn their cellar.
His appreciation for culture stimulated his intellectual curiosity, which extended to history—a subject he immersed himself in with passion and zeal. His insatiable appetite for reading led him to develop a deep comprehension of history, as he reveled in the captivating stories that molded civilizations across the ages.
After retiring, he and Donna relocated to Shaver Lake, California, seeking solace in nature’s embrace.
However, in 2007, they made Sun City, Texas, their permanent home. While Texas was Donna’s native state, it unexpectedly held deep familial roots and historical significance for Al too.
His legacy is one of resilience and tenacity, a testament to the power of perseverance and ambition. He leaves behind a wealth of memories cherished by those fortunate enough to have known him.
