Dalhart Aaron Ilse

Dalhart Aaron Ilse, 77, a lifelong resident of Williamson County, passed away on Sunday, March 23, 2025, in Georgetown, Texas.

Born in Georgetown, Texas, on February 4, 1948, Dalhart was an only child, born to Raymond Gus Ilse and Alice Biels Ilse. He was raised on the family farm, where he developed a strong work ethic and spent his days mastering his craft in ranching and agriculture. Dalhart loved animals, particularly horses, and enjoyed riding both competitively and for fun. He could be described as an animal whisperer as he could calm, befriend and train almost any animal. Dalhart relied on his faith and was a lifelong member of Christ Lutheran Church, where he was baptized on March 14, 1948, and confirmed on May 21, 1961.

After graduating from Jarrell High School in 1966, Dalhart attended Southwest Texas State University and graduated in 1970 with a B.S. in agriculture in the field of production and management.  He served on the Board of Directors for the Southwest Texas State University Rodeo Association and was a member of the Agricultural Honor Society, Delta Tau Alpha. During college Dalhart began working part-time for 4T Ranches, transitioning to full-time upon graduation.  In his role at 4T, Dalhart had full responsibility for the show herd and enjoyed traveling across the U.S. with the herd.

Dalhart married his high school sweetheart, Darlene LaNell Domel, on June 17, 1972, at Zion Lutheran Church in Walburg, Texas.  In the early years of their marriage, Darlene enjoyed accompanying Dalhart on some of his 4T trips and enjoyed their time living on the ranch with her real life “cowboy.” The couple celebrated 52 years of marriage this past June along with their children and grandchildren at Lake LBJ.

In 1976, Dalhart went on to work for the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, formerly, Soil Conservation Service, from which he retired after 30+ years of service in 2008.  During his time with the NRCS Dalhart assisted many local farmers and landowners throughout Bell, Milam and Williamson Counties in managing their land by providing them with long-term, sustainable, agricultural solutions. He made many friends during his time with NRCS and valued these relationships.  When his workday with NRCS ended, he would often come home, enjoy an early supper with the family and head back out to tend to his own farming and ranching needs. Dalhart predominantly farmed row crops including maize, oats, wheat and haygrazer and raised Herefords, Charolais, and Brahman cattle throughout his life. His children have many fond memories associated with harvest seasons, combining, hauling hay and enjoying their rather large, family “pets”.  Dalhart was particularly proud that the family farm was recognized as a Texas Century Farm, registered in the Texas Family Land Heritage Program, certifying that it has been maintained in continuous operation for more than 100 years by the same family.

Dalhart set goals and understood the value of hard work and perseverance to achieve those goals, values which he instilled in his children. He was a devoted husband and father and took great pride in his family, children and grandchildren. His grandsons enjoyed many laughs with Grandpa and often got a kick out of Grandpa’s commentary, antics and wisecracks. He enjoyed time spent with family, particularly family lake trips, hunting, tending to his animals, midnight snacks, a cold Dr. Pepper, and a good western movie marathon.

Dalhart is survived by his wife of 52 years Darlene (Domel) Ilse and children, Kristy Vrabel (Ryan), Jordan Ilse (Cherie), and Kyle Ilse, four grandchildren, Braeden and Ross Vrabel and Greyson and Evan Ilse, niece, Sharon Domel and cousin, Glenda Biels Gebert (Leland) and daughter, Tammy Elkins (Josh).  Dalhart is preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Alice Ilse; in-laws, Erich and Sydonia Domel; brother-in-law, Eugene Domel; and nephew, Eric Domel.

The family would like to extend its  appreciation for the prayers and support provided by family and friends during the past several months of Dalhart’s struggle with cancer treatment. The family is particularly grateful to Magnolia Hospice for their care and support in Dalhart’s final days.

Visitation with family and friends will be held Sunday, March 30, 2025, at The Gabriels Funeral Chapel from 5-7 p.m.  Funeral services will be held the following morning at 10 a.m. Monday, March 31, 2025, at Christ Lutheran Church, Georgetown, Texas, with the burial to follow at IOOF Cemetery in Georgetown, Texas.  Pallbearers are Eugene Buchhorn, Lloyd Fischer, Chad Hajda, Chuck Tonn, Braeden Vrabel and Ross Vrabel.  Honorary pallbearers include Bill Owen, Greyson Ilse and Evan Ilse.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Christ Lutheran Church, General Fund.
