Ed Rogers
Ed Rogers, of Georgetown, passed away in the early morning hours of Sunday, October 23, 2022, at the age of 88. Although unexpected, Ed was able to spend his last day surrounded by family.
A man of incomparable wisdom, Ed is remembered as husband, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, pastor, and friend. All who knew him felt a special kinship to him. He is mourned not only by his family, but also by many whom he served in the ministry of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Born January 21, 1934, to Earl and Chrystelle Rogers, Ed lived as servant and leader from an early age. As the eldest of his siblings, he was affectionately admired — a trend that would follow him all his days. Ed earned a Bachelor of Arts from Howard Payne University in 1956, and in his time there he married his wife, Sylvia, and began pastoring part-time. Together, they served in ministry to both the church and their family for 67 years.
In addition to his bachelor’s degree, Ed went on to earn a Master of Divinity and a Doctorate of Ministry from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Additionally he was awarded the status of Alumnus Honori Causa by Baylor University and an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity by Howard Payne University.
As a genuine man of God, he cultivated men and women of God. Ed’s first full-time pastorate was in Manitou Springs, Colorado, and he went on to pastor First Baptist Church in Dumas for 34 years. During that time Ed also spread the Gospel on four continents. Over the years, he served faithfully in a variety of leadership positions within the Baptist General Convention of Texas and preached in over 60 churches in the state of Texas. Working in service to Texan and Mexican Baptist hospitals and children’s homes, he served as both Chairman and Director of the Human Welfare Coordinating Board. To his final day, Ed was actively involved in leading and serving others in the name of Jesus.
Ed is survived by his wife, Sylvia; his children, Janna Hill and husband, Mike, Susan Morrison and husband, Neil, Richard Rogers and wife, Sarah; his siblings, David (Carol), Loretta (Lee), Evelyn (Tim), Ernest (Terrye), along with their families; his grandchildren, Kimberly, Allyson (Jake), Libby, Ty (Kara), Luke (Amanda), and Andrew; and his two great-grandchildren, Bailey and Titus.
A service will be held in celebration of Ed’s life at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 28, at First Baptist Church Georgetown with a period of visitation with the family beginning at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations should be sent to Children at Heart Ministries.
Ed’s was a life extremely well-lived. A recipient of blessing, he was a distributor of blessing. A true patriarch, he was attentive, affectionate, and kind. He was a monument of a man, a wellspring of wisdom, and source of immense blessing. He was intentional with his love, and he led his family by serving them faithfully — never failing to be present at any major life event. Most of all, Ed is remembered as a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ, into whose hands he is now eternally given.
