Jimmie Garner
Jimmie Garner
Jimmie Garner was born May 18, 1936, to James & Gladys (Smith) Garner at his Grandparents’ house in Bertram, Texas. He grew up on the family farm in Bertram alongside his younger brother, Johnny Garner. It was here he developed a strong work ethic and a love for his family’s farm. Later in life, his family moved from the farm into the big city of Austin, where Jimmie attended Austin High School. He met and fell in love with Winola Adams and married her on March 1, 1957, in Georgetown, TX. Together they had four children. He spent many hours driving his children to church, Little League, gymnastics, Girl and Boy Scouts, and many other functions.
He loved the outdoors and taught his children to love fishing and hunting. His children could appreciate the time spent at the farm working in the garden and tending to the cattle. When he was not hunting or fishing, he raced cars. You could find him at Little River racing his candy apple red 55 Chevy. He was also the pitcher for the Brentwood Church of Christ Men’s Fastpitch softball team when they won the National Championship in the Men’s Fastpitch league. His brother Johnny was the catcher for him. Jimmie and Winola would always discuss this trip to PA, where the games were played. Jimmie was a Union Sheet Metal worker for about 37 years until he retired.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his precious wife, Winola, and his daughter, Janet Johnson. His in-Laws Carl & Sepha Adams, and Brother & Sister-in-Law Ralph and Darlene Campbell. He is survived by his brother Johnny and Sister in-Law Sandra Garner of Bertram, Jimmie’s children, and their spouses: Lee and Kim Garner of Kempner, Gena and Jimmy Mabry of Round Rock, Jackie and Pattie Garner of Buchanan Dam, Grandchildren: Cooper, Lance, Grant, Krystle, Cori, and Brent. 12 Great-grandchildren and one on the way. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He is now free from the demon that made his life miserable for the last 35 years. He was laid to rest beside his wife in the Garner Family plot at Shady Grove Cemetery, Bertram, Texas. In the land where we’ll never grow old.
