Marilyn Mehaffey

Marilyn Mehaffey of Georgetown, Texas, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 20, 2024.  She was born on March 28, 1940 to Reverend John and Margueritte (Nolan) Schlenker in Peoria, Illinois. She grew up in the Baptist church in Glasford, Illinois, where she said she had “fun” and loved singing the hymns in the choir.  She graduated from Timber Township High School in 1961.

In 1968, she moved to Rochester, Minnesota, with her parents to be closer to family in Minnesota. She cared for her parents, babysat and worked at Libby’s. It was in Rochester that she met the next-door neighbor, Donald Mehaffey, who became her spouse on June 22, 1974.  In 1980, the Mehaffeys moved to Georgetown, Texas, for Don’s employment with I.B.M. After Don’s passing on November 14, 2020, she moved to the Wesleyan at Estrella.  Autumn Leaves of Georgetown had been her home since July 2022.

Marilyn got involved in the community by joining the First Presbyterian Church of Georgetown, volunteering for Meals on Wheels, and volunteering to drive cancer patients.  Marilyn also enjoyed taking Daisy-dog to visit seniors.  She served as Deacon at the church for several years on the service committee.

The Mehaffeys enjoyed travel! They visited 18 national parks, and nearly all 50 states.  Marilyn said she “loved to see all the beauty that God created!” Marilyn and Don loved dogs and welcomed Snickers, Daisy, Millie, and Abbie into their family over the years.   Marilyn enjoyed doing needlepoint, singing, and laughing with all her friends.

Marilyn is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Donald, and her sister, JoMar Dicke.  She is survived by her sister, Ruth Blindt of Byron, Minnesota; sister-in-law, Linda Kness of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; brother-in-law Paul Dicke of Goodhue, Minnesota; nephews and nieces. Marilyn had the warmest soul and a wonderful sense of humor.  She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, February 26 at 11 a.m. at the Presbyterian Cemetery at 2106 20th Street, Georgetown, Texas.

Memorial donations are preferred to the Parkinson’s Foundation, Gold Ribbon Rescue, or The First Presbyterian Church of Georgetown.
