The Georgetown Palace Theatre opened Funny Little Thing Called Love June 21 on the Playhouse Stage. The play is written by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten. The trio specialize in writing light theater comedies with strong roles for women.

Summer vegetables lead to good harvests

We’re firmly in the month of June, which means temperatures are heating up. Our spring garden harvest is rolling in with an abundant supply of tomatoes, squash, onions and green beans.

Cheer ‘Whoopee!’ for whoopie pies

Whoopie Pies have delighted Mainers for generations. My good friend, Cathy Hotham moved from Maine to Georgetown several years ago but she continues to long for the round cake sandwiches. The name comes from the enthusiastic response the sweet treat elicits but the origins are not as clear.

David Valdez presents at the WCAG meeting

The Williamson County Art Guild is hosting an artist reception at 708 South Rock Street from 5-7 p.m., June 7. New and unique art created by local artists will be center stage along with refreshments and live music. WCAG typically hosts receptions on the first Friday of each month.

A smokin’ Memorial Day

On Monday, Americans honored those who died while serving in the Armed Forces. President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, New York, the “birthplace” of Memorial Day. There, a ceremony on May 5, 1866, honored local veterans who had fought in the Civil War.

Southwestern University women place second in championship golf tournament

The Southern Collegiate Athletic Association championship golf tournament challenged “The New Course” at the White Bluff Resort in Whitney, northwest of Waco. This was a fresh golfing challenge, since the Texas tournament had been contested in Kerrville for the past several years.

ArtScapes: Art Guild hosts first student art show

“Art Must Survive” is the theme of the first student art show hosted by The Williamson County Art Guild. The public is invited to the opening reception for these young and talented artists at the WCAG Gallery on Friday May 3 from 5-7 p.m., 708 Rock Street.
