Block party promotes community in North Old Town neighborhood

Dozens of neighbors gathered Sunday, November 13, for the second annual North Old Town Block Party.

During Sunday’s event, North Old Town residents and neighbors enjoyed games, lunch and conversation. Elected officials and city staff attended, including District 1 Council Member Jake French, transportation manager Lua Saluone and assistant planning director Nat Waggoner.

North Old Town — a Georgetown neighborhood located between San Gabriel Park and the intersection of Williams Drive with North Austin Avenue — is home to one of the city’s formalized neighborhood associations, formed by residents through a municipal program meant to promote opportunities for the community to voice opinions regarding the city’s planning processes and incoming developments.

Neighborhood associations can open the door for creating neighborhood plans which, according to the city website, helps residents “provide policy guidance and recommendations for land-use, housing, transportation, historic and cultural preservation, parks and open space, and economic development.”

North Old Town residents formed their neighborhood association once concerns about keeping the community’s character intact while growth outlined by the city’s Future Land Use Plan draws nearer. Residents are in continued conversation with the city to provide guidance on future development of the area.
