Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with Georgetown events

The third Monday of January is always reserved for Martin Luther King Jr. Day to remember the civil rights leader and his contributions to the people of the United States and beyond. 

In Georgetown, there are three events that take place annually to honor the legacy of Dr. King. 

MLK Day march 

The city’s annual MLK Day march begins at noon on January 19 at the Williamson County Courthouse. After meeting on the north side of the courthouse, participants will march to Macedonia Baptist Church for a celebration and talk by a keynote speaker Gerald Jones, associate vice president for student life and dean of students at Southwestern. People are asked to start gathering at 11:45 a.m. 

This event is open and free to the public. The event is sponsored by the Georgetown Fellowship of Churches. 

Youth Service Day 

The Georgetown Project will host a service day for high school students from 9 a.m. to noon on January 19 at the Georgetown Community Center. There will be a variety of projects and activities available along with snacks, drinks and certificates for the hours of service provided.

MLK Prayer Breakfast for Community Leaders 

The Georgetown Police Department and the Georgetown Ministerial Alliance will host a light breakfast at 8 a.m. on January 19 at the Public Safety Operations and Training Center at 3500 DB Wood Road. 

City of Georgetown closures 

Certain city offices will be closed on MLK Day in observance of the holiday. There will be normal solid waste and recycling collection.

The city offices and facilities that will be closed include: 

  • Art Center, 816 South Main Street 
  • askGTX and Customer Care call centers 
  • City Hall, 808 Martin Luther King Jr. Street 
  • Council and Courts Building (including Municipal Court), 510 West Ninth Street 
  • Georgetown Municipal Complex, 300-1 Industrial Avenue 
  • GoGeo paratransit bus services; residents can use the rideGTX program for rideshare options 
  • Grace Heritage Center, 817 South Main Street 
  • Parks and Recreation Administration, 1101 North College Street 
  • Planning Department, 809 Martin Luther King Jr. Street 
  • Public Library, 402 West Eighth Street 
  • Public Safety Operations and Training Center, Police Records, and Fire Support Services offices, 3500 DB Wood Road 
  • Recreation Center, 1003 North Austin Avenue 
  • Tennis Center, 400 Serenada Drive 
  • Visitors Center, 502 S. Main Street 

Facilities that will be open include the Airport Terminal, Garey Park and the Transfer Station at 250 WL Walden Drive
