Photos: Repairs, downed trees and a raging river at San Gabriel Park

Although the park remains closed, curious Georgetown residents visited San Gabriel Park Sunday to check out damage left behind by the raging river of the day before.

They sloshed through mud several inches deep stretching from the riverbank to the road. They gasped at massive tree trunks laying flat on the ground, and laughed at waddling ducks — just an ordinary day for them. One little girl and her mom found several tiny fish washed 50 feet or so up from the riverbank.

And hard at work, men from the City of Georgetown Water and Systems Engineering departments, were repairing broken water lines. One was done, but there were several more to go before a boil water notice for parts of Georgetown can be lifted. The order is expected to stay in place until late Monday, July 7.

A mile upstream of the park, the Austin Avenue bridges remain closed to traffic. According to the city, a structural engineer is scheduled to assess the Austin Avenue bridges today. The bridges will reopen once it is confirmed they are safe.
