$15,000 grant supports mobile mammography unit
Lone Star Circle of Care in Georgetown received a $15,000 Blue Impact grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas to help with operational support for its Big Pink Bus mobile mammography unit.
“It’s nice to be awarded funds, and to be able to hear that from our team, and to be able to share internally that we’ve been awarded funds, is just a really great deal,” said Rebecca Sorensen, program director for the Big Pink Bus.
Through this grant, Lone Star Circle of Care will continue to provide mobile screening mammograms to those across Central Texas.
“This will help keep our unit in good shape and on the road, and able to get to the places that we need to to continue to provide our services,” Ms. Sorensen said. “We like to tell our patients and the community that early detection really is the best prevention. So being able to get that screening group mammogram is really important, and we’re happy to be able to provide that service to women who need it in our community.”
Since the Big Pink Bus started providing services in 2021, there have been almost 8,000 mammograms provided with an average of 200 patients a month, Ms. Sorensen said.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas president Jim Springfield said the organization is honored to support Lone Star Circle of care to help close the gaps around maternal health.
“Throughout our 95 years of serving Texas, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas remains committed to the belief that lasting change is built through collective action and community-driven solutions,” Mr. Springfield said. “We know by empowering their expertise and passion to strengthen optimal health outcomes in their local community, we’re helping inspire healthier futures.”
