One-minute recap: Commissioners approve road names, Juneteenth proclamation

With two Commissioners missing from the dias Tuesday, June 11, the Williamson County Commissioner’s court unanimously approved the 40-item consent agenda in an abridged, one-minute meeting. Terry Cook and Valerie Covey were both absent.

Juneteenth celebrations around Georgetown

A Georgetown tradition for 72 years, the city’s Juneteenth celebration will take place over two days on June 14-15. Juneteenth marks the day that slaves were freed in Texas.

Entering into the month of June, the City of Georgetown remains in a Stage 2 drought, which is classified as a severe drought.

Georgetown police address mental health crises with intervention team

Georgetown’s Assistant Police Chief Roland Waits said the department is upping their game when it comes to mental health calls and improving as first responders.

Leander dog trainer scores five medals at world competition

Courtney Moore of Leander earned five medals at the 2024 World Agility Championship in France, with her 4-year-old Border Collie/Papillon mix. The dog’s name is Rayn’s Everything’s Better with Butter.

County youth program honored with national recognition

Originating in 2007, Teen Courts in Texas provide a voluntary alternative to traditional adjudication and sentencing for teenagers in municipal or justice courts. The city of Georgetown has a program, but the county teen courts have been commemorated on a national level.

Georgetown scout leads community project to create scatter garden, memorial

The International Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery in Georgetown is now home to a new scatter garden for cremation ashes, a memorial wall and a flag pole thanks to a community project led by Boy Scout Trever Suggs. A ribbon cutting was held at the garden May 23.

Hutto man sentenced to 99 years for sexual assault of a child

A Williamson County jury found Josue Antonio Gurrola, 39, of Hutto, guilty of sexual assault of a child on Tuesday, June 4.  After the three-day trial, the jury sentenced Mr. Gurrola to confinement in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice-Institutional Division for 99 years.
