Georgetown canvasses sales tax election
Georgetown’s street maintenance sales tax was approved by anoverwhelmingmajorityduring the city’s November 8 special election. Results of the vote were canvassed during a city council meeting November 22.
Since 2002, Georgetown residents have approved a 0.25 percent sales tax to be used for maintenance on municipal roads. The quarter-cent sales tax for street maintenance is collected from all purchases made within city limits and has brought in over $46 million in dedicated revenues since it was implemented.
In accordance with state law, the city must hold a reauthorization vote for the quarter-cent sales tax every four years. The item appeared on the November ballot as Proposition A and was the only city item.
Residents supported the existing sales tax with an overwhelming majority. According to city secretary Robyn Densmore, 26,382 residents voted in favor of the sales tax, while 6,395 voted against. A total of 32,777 votes were accounted for by the county, which then reported the numbers to the city.
City council members canvassed the election results unanimously with a roll call vote during the November 22 meeting.
