Ronald Lee Skaggs

Ronald Lee Skaggs

Ronald Lee Skaggs, age 76, passed away on Monday, July 10, 2023, in Austin, Texas. Ronnie was born in Athens, Texas on February 27, 1947, to Mildred Hale Skaggs and Calvin Vernon Skaggs. The family moved to Tyler when Ronnie was young. He graduated from John Tyler High in 1965 and married Gayland Zabcik on September 30, 1966, at First Christian Church of Tyler.

After marriage, Ronnie and Gayland moved to Duncanville, Texas where Ronnie worked for United Gas Pipeline and then the gasoline company in Carthage. His next opportunity brought the family to Tyler to work with his father selling cars.  Ronnie and his family moved to Friendswood, Texas, in 1974 where he worked for Calgon Carbon.

In 1982, Ronnie’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to move to Georgetown, Texas, where he founded Builders and Landscaping Services and retired in 2013.  It was truly a family business as his wife and both daughters worked with him.

Ronnie was a very active member of St Philip’s United Methodist Church in Round Rock, Texas. He held leadership positions and ushered.  For many years, Ronnie and Gayland supplied donuts to the Church to make sure that everyone including his grandchildren would have them to enjoy during Sunday morning fellowship time.

Ronnie’s passions for bowling led him to purchase Interstate Lanes in Round Rock, Texas in 1995.  Ronnie earned his silver level teaching certificate so he could give lessons and coach the youth.

Ronnie pursed his hobbies of hunting and fishing with dedication. He shared his love of the great outdoors with his grandchildren by taking them hunting, fishing, skiing, boating and many other outdoor activities.  Ronnie never missed his grandchildren’s events no matter the significance. He and his family took many great trips to many wonderful destinations.  All the parents and kids he came in contact with became a part of his group as Ronnie never met a stranger.

As Ronnie would say, he led a very blessed life but those who felt his impact would say they were the ones who were truly blessed.

Ronnie is survived by his loving wife, Gayland Skaggs of Georgetown, TX; his sister, Jessie Tucker of Township, MI; his daughter, Ginnie Colbert and husband Doug of Austin, TX, his grandson William and wife Mallory, and their son Wyatt, and his granddaughter Anna; his daughter Belinda Kent of Georgetown, TX, and his granddaughters Rebecca and Megan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ronnie is preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Mildred Skaggs; his sister, Joyce Helsley; and his nephew, James Helsley.

Services for Ronnie were held on Friday, July 14, 2023. He was laid to rest at Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery.
