Georgetown opens warming center to provide shelter during low overnight temps

The Madella Hilliard Neighborhood Center, located at 803 West Eighth Street, Georgetown, opened as a warming center  for people needing shelter Sunday, January 14, as temperatures dipped under 20 degrees.

The warming center is being overseen by Helping Hands of Georgetown, the Wilco Homeless Coalition and the Georgetown Health Foundation. Twenty cots and bedding were provided by the Central Texas Red Cross. Food was provided by Helping Hands of Georgetown.

Due to the cold weather, MLK Day events in Georgetown on Monday have been postponed. The warming center will be available again beginning at 8 p.m. on Monday, ahead of what is forecast to be the coldest evening of the year.
