Psychic offers insights to those who believe

Iza Avalos starts her intuitive readings at Silver Moon Curios by asking her clients to take a deep, grounding breath. As a psychic, she considers herself to be the bridge to the client’s higher self and their spirit world — not necessarily a predictor of the future.

“My goal is to help my clients on their journey, to trust in themselves more and be more in harmony with their spirit, their higher self,” she said.

Silver Moon Curios on Rock Street near the Square hosts a different intuitive reader each day of the week. Ms. Avalos helps clients along their journey each Thursday.

Ms. Avalos’ background is as a survivor support specialist for nonprofits, and she got her college degree in social science. Later, she did an apprenticeship with an herbalist and became more in touch with her indigenous Mexican background. She now uses her psychic abilities as an educator, an herbalist and a healing arts practitioner.

Ms. Avalos said she realized she was psychic at age 13. She found herself having recurring experiences of “seeing past the veil” into things that aren’t there to the naked eye. She would have premonitions and sometimes see ghosts.

“It sounds kind of cliche to like the typical witches story,” she said. “It can be kind of scary, if you don’t know what it is or what’s going on.”

Ms. Avalos walked through her process and shared a reading with the Sun. To start her psychic readings, she chose an oracle deck off the red velvet mat on her table. The mat helps contain the cards’ energy so she doesn’t ‘bring her work home’ with her, she said.

The Green Witch’s Oracle Card Deck has storybook-like depictions of plants, butterflies and other nature symbols. After a quick shuffle of the cards, she lays out a few to inspire her insights. The first card on top of the oracle deck was the Walking Staff.

“The walking staff,” she explained, “represents support and encouragement for continuing on the journey, even if you need to take a break and reset yourself.”

Ms. Avalos said she receives spiritual messages throughout her readings; she will see, hear and sometimes even taste things that are relevant to the client.

“Sometimes, I’ll pull a card I have read 1,000 times, and for this specific person, I’m reading it completely differently, because they have a specific connection with the symbol there,” she said.

Ms. Avalos wears metal dragonfly earrings because they remind her of her grandfather. Ms. Avalos said her intuition is sometimes only guided by the cards. But other times, her usual interpretation is overridden by what she called the client’s spirit team.

“They’re definitely encouraging you to let go a little bit,” Ms. Avalos said during her reading. “You don’t have to control every step of the situation. Just trust that when you make that choice to create your own well being, you make that choice to give yourself peace of mind.”

Although psychics are often portrayed as predicting the future, she said that isn’t what they all practice. Ms. Avalos said people often come to her open to any type of insight. She doesn’t ever provide clients an exact timeline for when something will happen.

“I’m not necessarily predicting events in your life. I’m never really going to be like, ‘You are going to meet the love of your life this month.’ It’s not really like that, and I also just don’t think that it’s super helpful. We all have free will. The future is always changing. For me, it’s more about empowering people than telling them what to do. Uplifting them, and giving them power.”

Ms. Avalos hopes her insights will help clients move past blockages in their life. She may tell them where they should focus their energy for that month. or she may see a traumatic childhood event suggest how that is impacting their current situation.

“That’s where I get to use my psychic abilities to address things that are deeper, that maybe the other person isn’t aware of,” she said. She said that she believes most people have natural intuitive abilities if they are open to receiving insight.

“I love a good chat with people who are skeptics,” she explained. “I’m always excited to give someone their first reading and just see what comes from it. I am the channel. I’m the bridge between but— the reading can only go as deep as you are open to going.”
