Barbara Gens, of Appleton, Minnesota, passed away Monday, July 20, 2026 at Appleton Area Health at the age of 82.
Memorial services were held Friday, July 24, 2026 at Zion Lutheran Church in Appleton, Minnesota.
Barbara Ellen Gens was born on August 2, 1943, in Appleton, Minnesota, to Reuben and Avis Brustuen. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Barbara attended and graduated from Appleton High School. Following high school, she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Education from Luther College.
Barbara began her teaching career in Lewiston, Minnesota, and later taught for many years at Centennial High School in Circle Pines, Minnesota. Barbara was married to Donald W. Gibson from 1968-1983. On May 2, 1987, she was united in marriage to David Gens, and together they made their home in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Barbara enjoyed a variety of crafts, especially crocheting, knitting, and beading. She enjoyed wintering in Texas, where she spent time with friends, played bridge, and sang with the local choir, The Sun City Singers.
Barbara is survived by her daughters, Jennifer Gibson (Lance) and Mari (Scott) Gibson-Mithun; step-daughters, Laura Newberger and Andrea Carter; honorary children, Maria “Lupe” (Don) Steigauf and Tania Tilesi (Albert Grim); grandchildren, Megan, Michael, Shayne, Eric (Jessica), Amanda, Margaret, Stephanie, Nicole and Zianya; 8 great-grandchildren; sister, Kari (Steve) Paulson; and many extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, David Gens; and step-daughter, Karen.
