George Lee Meyners passed away in his home in Georgetown, Texas, July 8, 2026.
Lee was born August 15, 1934 in Chicago, Illinois to Theodore (Ted) and Ruth Meyners. As a high school student, Lee fell in love with airplanes and in college, joined the NAVCADS Naval Aviation Program. In 1956, he got his Navy wings and spent two years as a fighter pilot in carrier operations across the Pacific. Lee was checked out on everything from SNJ's to F-8's. He retired from active duty after 4 years and stayed in the reserves 1959-1967.
Continuing his love of flying, Lee was hired by Continental Airlines in 1959 where he had quite an illustrious career. He qualified on every aircraft type except the DC-9, and had the pleasure of flying the company Sabreliner, taking CEO Robert Six and his wife, Audrey Meadows, in addition to other CEO's and movie stars to various and assorted destinations be it, business or pleasure.
Lee worked in the Continental training department for a number of years and helped take delivery of new aircraft purchased from Boeing, McDonnell Douglas and Airbus. He then helped train the pilots on the new aircraft. He loved going to work and did not consider it a job. He was considered by his fellow pilots to be "A good stick", "A pilot's pilot."
He had the need for speed which translates to his love for Corvettes.Lee had a love for cars in general. Old, new, he owned many through the years and loved turning them over, only to pick up another. But Corvette's were the "be all, end all" for him. He owned 38 of them! Buying them, enjoying each one, selling and picking up a newer version was the ultimate "thrill of the catch." A great story, Lee enjoyed driving his newest "Vette" as recently as a few days before his passing.
Lee lived in numerous places from his growing up years through his airline career. Two of his best remembrances were living in Honolulu where he flew Continental's subsidiary, Air Micronesia and Continental's destinations in the South Pacific. Another highlight was owning a ranch in Wimberley, Texas, where he and wife Mimi built a life with their three young adults creating some forever memories. Raising Brahman cattle as well as having a few goats and horses rounded out his flying life.
Years after Mimi's passing, Lee met and married Pamela Watters Meyners in 1994. Life on the ranch continued with many unforgettable birthdays, holidays and looking at his newest car purchase in his 12-car ranch garage! Lee absolutely loved car auctions and would often be found attending one of these and coming home the same day with a new find! Being married to a fellow crew member gave Lee and Pam the ability to fly/work trips together to international destinations for 5 years until Lee's retirement. The best of perks!
After selling the ranch, Lee wanted to try lake living, moving to their lake house on Lake LBJ in 2000. He immediately acquired two fast Sea Doo's which were loved more so than the boat! Many more fun family and friends' events took place through the years as a result of this lake house. The 4th of July stands out as the best! Many memories of swimming, jumping off the top of the dock, fishing, fishing, fishing, wake boarding, floating in a tube with beer in hand....sunrise and sunset skiing, birthdays, BBQ's, all of us piled on the inflatable banana pulled by Lee in his boat. Also, many a dumping by Lee pulling us in Big Mable. (Google Big Mable!) He loved providing and making available all of the things that made life on the lake a memory for us all.
A motorhome came into play while living at the lake. When not flying, many a fun and interesting trip taken to State Parks, Branson, surrounding states and numerous air/car shows. Being a proud member of the Confederate Air Force (now The Commemorative AirForce), attending every CAF airshow possible was high on the list for Lee and Pam.
Move to Sun City in 2004. The last, and best move ever! Joining the Zoomer's, the Country Western Dance Club, the Aviation Club, Oldies but Goodies Dance Club, Hunt and Fish Club (now Rod and Gun ) Corvette Club, and Computer Club all filled his life. Many great Zoomer trips, SC trips, cruises, Corvette drives, and more, were things he always looked forward to. Lee loved living here in Sun City and cherished the groups of friends he made especially at the American Legion, Mulley Men and joining the summer pool rats at the Cowan Creek pool. He always looked forward to his Tuesday "breakfast with the boys," the Continental retired pilots who also live here in Sun City. as well as Mulligan's breakfast each Sunday with special friends after church.
Lee is survived by his wife Pam, three adult children, and six grandchildren, in addition to numerous nieces and nephews. Lee was preceded in death by Ted and Ruth Meyners, Richard Meyners, and Mimi Meyners.
Lee was a true American, loving his country, his flag, his God and his family. "He said what he meant and meant what he said." He was a force to reckon with. He was generous to a fault. He was Chairman of the Board. He was the Captain of Pam's heart.He was loved. He will be forever missed.
