JOHN LEONARD HEFLEY, SR.
John was born in Los Angeles, California on February 23, 1937, and came to Texas at age 2 months. He passed away on September 22, 2026 in Georgetown, Texas. John’s parents, Thurman Doyle Hefley and Ruby Melva Mcauley - preceded him in death. His first wife Sharon Lanelle McQuay, is also deceased. His brother, Ronald Doyle Hefley is deceased. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Barbara Elaine Austin, his daughter Denise Williams, his son John Leonard Hefley, Jr. and two granddaughters, Harmonie-Hefley Lawson and Melodie Hefley-Lankop and their husbands Paul Lawson and David Lankop. He is also survived by his sisters, Melva Magee and Leona Barnett.
John grew up in Amarillo, Texas and started working part time in a golf pro shop at age 10. He learned to love the game and play it well. He won several tournaments in his early twenties, but did not turn pro. He graduated from Amarillo High School and joined the Marines in 1955. After 6 months of basic training, he chose reserve status and served for 6 years. John attended college at night to obtain a Marketing degree, working as a lineman to support his family during the day. After working for Shell Oil for a year he joined Kodak and became the head of sales for
the Southwest Region. He retired from Kodak. John met Elaine Austin in 1997. They married in 2001 and moved to Galveston, Texas. In 2009 they moved to Georgetown, Texas (Sun City). John enjoyed living in Sun City, playing golf, dancing, traveling and meeting new friends. And making everyone laugh.
Services for John will be on October 10 at 11:00 AM at Grace Episcopal Church, 1314
East University Avenue, in Georgetown, Texas.
