Out and About: Georgetown celebrates Day of the Dead

Día de los Muertos originated in Mexico but was celebrated locally with beautiful symbols, traditions and imagery in the remembrance of loved ones.The joyful three-day holiday starts October 31 with the Day of the Little Angels when spirits of deceased children visit their families.

Descendants honor Perry Cemetery with historic dedication

All Hallows’ Eve on October 31 precedes All Saints’ Day on November 1 and All Souls’ Day on November 2. The three consecutive Christian days, called Allhallowtide, traditionally include cemetery visits to honor the dead and to reflect on our own mortality.

Out and About: A ghost-town day trip to kick off fall

When fall arrives it’s time to hit the road. My recent outing was a bus trip organized by Jerilee Prather. The popular and much appreciated trip planner is helping Sun City residents make memories one trip at a time.

In 1985, Ronald Reagan began his second term as president, and Mikhail Gorbachev became the new Soviet leader.  The Live Aid concert raised awareness for famine in Africa and the first version of Microsoft Windows was released. In Texas, the first Adopt-a-Highway sign went up.

Lifelong Learners starts fall session with free lecture series

Lifelong Learners Georgetown, formerly Senior University, is a continuing education community that has provided adult courses for over two decades.Volunteers with outstanding credentials give in-person presentations on the arts, science, history, technology, geography, medicine, music and more.

The annual State Fair of Texas, held in Dallas at Fair Park, begins the last Friday in September and lasts for 24 days. The event features family-friendly activities, a car show, rodeo, pig races, live music and countless food options.

Presidents, Independence Day celebrations and Georgetown events

Independence Day is a time to reflect and give thanks for our freedoms. The holiday began with the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain in 1776.It’s been a federal holiday since 1941.
Former Georgetown Area Parkinson’s Support Executive Director Mary Jane Berry has passed the torch to Georgetown resident James Lavender. The group helps spread awareness while helping those suffering with Parkinson’s disease.

Georgetown Parkinson’s group sees new leadership, continued community service

April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month, and World Parkinson Day is April 11. Happy birthday to James Parkinson, the English surgeon whose 1817 work described what would later be named Parkinson’s disease. The Parkinson color and symbol is the red tulip named for James Parkinson.
