In 2025, there were about 560,000 total scams reported in the U.S., with $20.9 billion in reported losses. Georgetown residents fall victim weekly, with reported losses ranging from a few hundred dollars to hundreds of thousands at a time.

County Briefs: Commissioners divided on landfill fees

Waste Management — which runs the county’s landfill — will increase typing fees by 6 percent, or $3, effective August 1. According to county documents, the previous price of $49.90 per ton will increase to $52.90 per ton.
