Don’t mess with a Texas Thanksgiving

“Don’t mess with Texas” originated as an anti-litter slogan. It aired New Year’s Day, 1986, during the Cotton Bowl and became one of the most recognized state slogans. Texas bravado also made the swagger statement a battle cry not to mess with our state.

It’s time to spice things up. Our neighboring state is promoted as the “Land of Enchantment.”  New Mexico is a land of mountains and desert expanses. It’s home to Native American tribes and an astounding Hispanic culture.

Cucumbers are a bit boring until they get pickled. The History Channel website tells us Cleopatra credited pickles with contributing to her health and beauty while Julius Caesar gave pickles to soldiers in the belief they would provide strength.

Whoopie Pies have delighted Mainers for generations. My good friend, Cathy Hotham moved from Maine to Georgetown several years ago but she continues to long for the round cake sandwiches. The name comes from the enthusiastic response the sweet treat elicits but the origins are not as clear.

A smokin’ Memorial Day

On Monday, Americans honored those who died while serving in the Armed Forces. President Lyndon Johnson declared Waterloo, New York, the “birthplace” of Memorial Day. There, a ceremony on May 5, 1866, honored local veterans who had fought in the Civil War.

Taste of the town: Matzo for Passover
