We’ve all heard that Eskimos have 50 words for snow. In the late 19th century, anthropologist and linguist Franz Boas studied Inuit communities and observed that Eskimos had an abundance of words for the white stuff that is a novelty in Texas.

In the United States, the second Sunday in May has been an official holiday since 1914.
However, honoring mom is done around the world in various traditions. I became aware of this when my daughter, who lives in Scotland, told me she was celebrating Mother’s Day in March.

Taste of the town: From gum to Georgetown, 1848 was a very good year

In 1848, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican–American War, Wisconsin became a state, Zachary Taylor was elected president and the Seneca Falls Convention became the first women’s rights convention.
It was also the year Williamson County and Georgetown were created.

Tastes of the Town: Kombucha: It’s Alive!

Occasionally my husband prepares a fermented drink from living organisms and our kitchen takes on the look of a mad scientist’s lab.
SCOBY, Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast, is the living culture. This host is fed tea and sugar and fermentation produces an effervescent kombucha drink.
