Tastes of the Town: The first Thanksgivings in Texas

Texans have much to brag about. Still, claims that the first Thanksgiving actually took place in what is now El Paso took me by surprise.  In 1598, Spanish explorer Juan de Onate and his expedition traveled North from Mexico for 50 days.

Tastes of the Town: Kombucha: It’s Alive!

Occasionally my husband prepares a fermented drink from living organisms and our kitchen takes on the look of a mad scientist’s lab. SCOBY, Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast, is the living culture. This host is fed tea and sugar and fermentation produces an effervescent kombucha drink.
