Frustrated Old Town residents packed a community meeting hosted by Georgetown City Council member Amanda Parr Wednesday, January 7, to learn about possible changes to downtown traffic signals and Austin Avenue. The meeting discussed work associated with the Austin Avenue Corridor Study.

HARC approves changes to old Wesleyan building

The Historic Architecture Review Commission on Thursday, October 9, accepted pre-conceptual plans for additions and renovations the Texas Municipal League could make to the old Wesleyan building at 205 East University Avenue.
Construction crews began early morning on June 26, 2012 tearing down the exterior of the city-owned building on Main Street. Workers used power saws, handheld jackhammers and a specially outfitted bobcat to take down the brick building piece-by-piece. The demolition is part of a project to ready the space for the Grape Creek Winery, which won an economic incentive loan to establish its business on the Courthouse Square. (Sun archive photo)

Georgetown council approves historic home tax exemption

Historic homes primarily in the Old Town and downtown areas doing certain outdoor repairs of $10,000 or more will receive a tax exemption starting at 25 percent. The program was approved on its first reading during the regular meeting of Georgetown City Council at its September 12 meeting.

Giant tortoise enjoys adventure in Old Town

A giant 12-year-old African Sulcata tortoise was found wandering Old Town a few streets from the Square Thursday, December 15. The tortoise was discovered by neighbors and sequestered in a truck bed until Animal Control Officer Angela Jones was able to collect her.
