Georgetown is noted for its “Most Beautiful Town Square,” but what about its giving spirit? Holiday Meals Delivered, formally the Georgetown Christmas Day Program, has been a “giving” community activity for about 25 years.

Enjoy your freedom’s eve celebrations this year

On New Year’s Eve, many African Americans attend church for Watch Night Service. The night of prayer, commemoration and celebration ends at midnight with the new year.  Watch Night Service is a Christian tradition that began in the Czech Republic and was adopted by congregations around the world.

Impossibly easy pies are magic in the kitchen

Recently, I learned about depression-era water pies.  During tough times, people were desperate to treat their families to something sweet. Referred to in a cookbook as Hard Times Pie, the desert was made with water, flour, butter and sugar.

The man walked into the grocery store, wearing his misfortune like the shy and crooked grin on his careworn face. The store clerk did not know where the man had come from. He just sort of appeared, there in front of the clerk, who looked up and saw this stranger standing before him.

Some warm drinks for cool temperatures this Christmas

Today as I write this, it’s chilly outside and the weather predictions are for a much colder Christmas day. In high hopes of a chilly day and a big fire in the fireplace (but no ice!), here are some favorite quaffs to help warm you up on a chilly morning or evening.

Candles, choirs and communion services during the holiday season

Christmas is this weekend, providing opportunities to attend religious services and events at Georgetown churches December 23-25, as well as the following weekend for the New Year.   Friday, December 23 Christmas Eve Eve • 4 p.m., First Baptist Church, 1333 West University Avenue • 6 p.m.
