May race set for Georgetown City Council

Mayor, District 2 draw no challengers, two candidates file for District 6

Georgetown Mayor Josh Schroeder will serve a third term leading the city after Friday’s candidate filing deadline passed without drawing any interest from possible challengers.

“My third term officially started at 5 p.m. today,” Mayor Schroeder said online Friday afternoon. “No one filed to run against me, so thanks to everyone in the community for all the support. Back to work!”

At least one new face will join the city council in May. Resident Doug Noble will serve as the new District 2 council member. He told the Sun earlier this month that his top priorities are public safety, maintaining infrastructure for water and roads, and maintaining downtown Georgetown’s charm.

Mr. Noble will replace incumbent Shawn Hood, who decided not to run for re-election. No other candidate filed for the seat, which serves residents in Wolf Ranch, the Rivery, River Chase, River Ridge and Northwest Boulevard.

In Council District 6, incumbent Jake French did draw one challenger. He will face resident Emily Kaye Kipp, who filed on February 12. District 6 encompasses historic downtown Georgetown, Old Town, North Old Town, the Track, Ridge, Grasshopper Neighborhood, Southwestern University, Parkview Estates and Katy Crossing.

The deadline for filing was February 13 at 5 p.m. In accordance with state law, if candidates for city council seats of mayor are unopposed, the council will cancel the election. Early in-person voting is April 20-28 with Election Day on May 2. The last day to register to vote is April 2.

A special election to approve a sale of part of the city’s water territory to National Utility Infrastructure for $60 million will also appear on the May 2 ballot for Georgetown residents.

Early voting and election day polling places, dates and times will be finalized this spring, and will be available on the county’s election page: www.wilcotx.gov/185/Elections.
