Georgetown breaks ground on parking garage

A project years in the making, the City of Georgetown broke ground on its first public city parking garage on March 26. The garage is being built at 502 South Main Street, about a block north of the Square and next door to the Tamiro Plaza residential and retail development.

City council backtracks, changes design choice for Austin Avenue pedestrian bridge

After choosing to move forward with a simplified Austin Avenue pedestrian bridge due to budget constraints, Georgetown City Council changed their decision March 26 to move forward with a more dramatic and expensive bridge option that was well-liked by the majority of the council.

Residents raise voices against rising building heights downtown

Georgetown City Council will be raising the maximum allowable building heights for parts of downtown Georgetown. However, debates on how much those heights will be raised to — from the existing 40-foot limits to either 52 or 57.5 feet — continued during a workshop March 26.

Cities see revenues in recent sales tax report

Cities across the county saw overall gains in sales tax yields according to the March report by the Texas Comptroller. When comparing the numbers, seven of the 12 reported cities gained earnings compared to 2023 data.

Native American roots along the San Gabriel River go back more than 10,000 years

The long history of Native Americans in Williamson County came to life March 24 during a walk-and-learn along the San Gabriel River. The tour guide was Georgetown resident and historian Helen Cordes. About 70 history buffs joined the tour in morning and afternoon sessions.

Southwestern ponders future development of 560 acres

Southwestern University is soliciting community input on how to develop 560 vacant acres lying east and northeast of its campus. “We are in a visionary phase right now,” Chief Marketing Officer Dinah Ritchie told a group composed of Georgetown’s nonprofit sector representatives on March 22.

Granger gears up for eclipse festivities

The City of Granger and the Granger Main Street Program are looking for volunteers for their Journey Into Darkness eclipse festival. The event is scheduled from April 6-8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at City Park on 215 East Davilla Street.
