Jacquelyn Sobotik

Jacquelyn Sobotik passed from this world on Saturday, April 22, 2023, with her family by her side. Born in Luling, Texas, on July 21, 1935, she was smart, beautiful, feisty, curious and compassionate. She loved traveling, reading, gardening and spending time with family and friends.

She studied design and fashion at North Texas State College and always retained her interest in stylish clothes and fashionable shoes. Her cabinets were full of patterns, sketches, and fabrics she collected from her travels. Even in memory care, she’d ask about your clothes, who designed them and demand to try on your shoes.

Jacque was an avid community volunteer. She was a lifelong Girl Scout and taught canoeing and camping skills for the scouts, as well as Basic First Aid and CPR badges. She also devoted many years to the Red Cross and as a Master Naturalist. Blessed with a green thumb, Jacque was a Master Gardener with more than 2,000 hours of service and teaching. She never met a plant she couldn’t revive or a Plumeria that didn’t deserve her devout attention.

She was an active member of the Pilot Club and the Women’s Auxiliary at Galveston County Hospital and was instrumental in bringing the Lifeline Program (emergency response wearable buttons) to Galveston County. In 1995, after volunteering for five years in the Master Gardener program, Jacque joined the staff of the Galveston County Extension Service and worked there until her retirement.

In high school band, she bet a friend to see who could get a date with handsome Bob Sobotik. Jacque won. The date lasted seven years and led to 65 years of marriage. In 1960, Bob and Jacque made their home in LaMarque, Texas, where Bob worked as a chemical engineer for several refineries. They welcomed their only child, Stephanie, in 1964, and Jacque swore she would be adventurous, fearless and curious. Bob and Jacque retired to Sun City in Georgetown, Texas, in 2007.

Jacque was the friend you wanted in a crisis. She was a great listener; she had the best laugh and the warmest smile. She was always on your side and the twinkle in her eye meant she was going to get you in trouble or challenge authority. She drove the most raucous carpools and road trips around and loved any adventure, especially involving travel, ships and whitewater canoeing.

Jacque is preceded in death by her parents and in-laws and survived by her loving husband, Bob, her daughter, Stephanie, her daughter-in-law, Julie, and many friends, neighbors and fellow Master Gardeners.

Please join Bob, Stephanie and Julie for a service celebrating Jacque’s life on Tuesday, May 2, at 2 p.m. at Grace Episcopal – West, 4402 DB Wood Road, Georgetown, Texas, 78633. Although Jacque loved flowers, please consider helping our neighbors by donating instead to Caring Place (caringplacetx.org) in her memory.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the incredible teams at University Village Memory Care and Valerian Hospice Care. Terra, Donetta, Rose, Dorie, Pam, Chrissandra, Fannie, Antonia, Neil, Angelo, Millicent, Elisabeth, Bernadette, Vicki, Maria, Teresa, Ledyi, Marilyn, Clarissa and the rest of the team brought out the best in Jacque and eased her gracefully into the next world. We are forever grateful.
