Mary Helen Waterman Loescher
Mary Helen Waterman Loescher, beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on August 10, 2023, in Cedar Park, Texas, at the age of 83. She faced a long and courageous battle with Lewy Body Dementia, demonstrating immense strength and grace throughout her journey.
Born on December 10, 1939, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Mary was the youngest child of Margaret and Merwin Waterman. She grew up in a loving home and graduated from Ann Arbor High School in 1957, laying the foundation for the remarkable life she would lead.
In 1959, Mary married her first love, Wolfgang Loescher, who she met during her freshman year at the University of Michigan while they stood in line for football tickets. Their union was blessed with four children, and they embarked on a journey together that took them across the United States due to Wolfgang’s work. From New York to Iowa, California, Arizona, and finally settling in Georgetown, Texas in 1975, their life was an adventure filled with love, laughter and many camping vacations.
Mary’s dedication to her family knew no bounds. She lovingly raised her children and created a warm, nurturing home no matter where they were. When Wolfgang retired early for health reasons, Mary chose to reenter the workforce, showcasing her remarkable work ethic and determination. She contributed her talents first to the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and later at the Registrar’s Office for Southwestern University, leaving a lasting impact on both institutions.
After Wolfgang’s early passing in 1997, Mary’s indomitable spirit persevered. In 2001, she chose to marry Wolfgang’s younger brother, Albrecht, a decision that showcased her capacity for love and embracing new beginnings. Mary and Al enjoyed many adventures, traveling the country in their camper van, visiting extended family and enjoying our beautiful country. On her last day, Albrecht was lying beside her holding her hand to the end.
Mary’s legacy is carried on by her cherished children: Kristie (Frank) of Austin, Michael (Kristin) of South Dakota, M. Wolfgang (Christina) of Colorado, and Margaret of Georgetown. She is also survived by her stepchildren Gary (Dorothy) and Cari (Robert), both of Illinois, as well as a treasured assembly of grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Wolfgang, her parents, and her sisters Anne and Jane Waterman.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers at Cedar Ridge Alzheimer’s Special Care Center and Silvarado Hospice for their exceptional care and support during Mary’s final days.
In accordance with her wishes, Mary will not have a memorial service. Instead, in honor of her lifetime demonstration of unwavering kindness, the family encourages you to perform an act of kindness as a tribute to her memory. Mary’s legacy of love, strength and compassion will forever resonate in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.
