Bonnie Hammett gained her angel wings on June 20, 2026, in Belton, Texas, just days after celebrating her 71st birthday. She was born on June 17, 1955, in Georgetown, Texas, to Kermit and Jaunitta Peterson.
Bonnie was known by many names throughout her life. She was “Babe” to her husband, “Mom” to her children, “Momma Hammett” to countless friends, and “Mrs. Hammett” or “Mrs. Bonnie” to many others. However, the title she cherished most was “Nanny.” Nothing brought her greater joy than her family, especially her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Kermit and Jaunitta Peterson, and her brother, Donnie Peterson.
Bonnie is survived by her loving husband of 52 and a half years, Danny Hammett; her son, Billy Hammett and wife Lorraine; her daughter, Bonitta Hammett; her grandson, Riley Hammett; and her granddaughter, Laney Hammett. She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who loved her deeply and will miss her greatly.
A true jack-of-all-trades, Bonnie dedicated herself to both her family and her community throughout her life. She worked in a veterinary office, a hardware store, a grocery store, Tractor Supply, and as secretary for her family’s electrical business. She also faithfully served her community as a volunteer fire department treasurer, secretary, and first responder. One of her favorite jobs was working in the school cafeteria, where she was able to be closer to her grandchildren and watch them grow.
Bonnie was incredibly talented and creative. She loved embroidery and sewing, creating everything from baby and doll clothes to blankets, purses, and pouches. She also had a special gift in the kitchen. Family gatherings were often centered around the treats she lovingly made, and her fudge and famous Congo bars became favorites that everyone looked forward to. Whether she was baking for family, friends, or a community event, Bonnie showed her love through the food she shared. In recent years, she also enjoyed painting small garden statues and displaying them proudly in her yard.
Today, rather than saying goodbye, we celebrate a life well lived and a woman who touched countless hearts. Bonnie leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, hard work, and devotion to her family. We can only imagine her cheering for the Cougars, keeping an eye on all of us, and making herself right at home in Heaven.
Though our hearts are broken, we find comfort in the memories she gave us and the lessons she taught us. Her love will continue to live on in the family she cherished and the many lives she touched.
There are no goodbyes here—only “We’ll see you later.” We love you, Mom and Nanny, and we will carry you with us always.
A Celebration of Life will be held on July 5, 2026, at 2pm at the Moravian Hall, located at 2300 CR 316, Jarrell, Texas 76537. Family and friends are invited to join us as we gather to honor, remember, and celebrate Bonnie’s life
