Gary Randal Neel passed away March 7, 2023, at the age of 68. Gary led a life of humble adventure with a love for the outdoors, working with his hands, and a keen sense of duty and respect. Born in Ft. Worth to Curtis Neel and Bettye (O’Toole) Neel, he moved to Comanche to spend his teen years working a ranch, going to high school, and even participating in the local rodeo circuit. While there he met wife of almost 50 years, Sue (Sherry) Neel. Following in the steps of family members, Gary joined the Army after graduating from high school and retired after a distinguished twenty-year career and numerous honors, including the Bronze Star for heroic achievement during Desert Storm. His commitment to serve continued in civilian life where he volunteered his time as an American Red Cross instructor, Guide for wounded veterans as part of the Wounded Warrior Project, and finally as Williamson County ESD 5 Board Commissioner.
A modern Renaissance man with expansive knowledge and experience, Gary could and would help you build a house, fix your car, hunt, fish, or chat about world affairs around a campfire (preferably with a Crown and Coke). If you were lucky, he would share a story or two of his own. Wherever he went, he could connect with someone, make them feel at ease, and always earned a measure of respect — whether it was a passing stranger, men under his command, or even from a local dignitary who gifted him a falcon while he was in Desert Storm.
For the life he lived and so much more, his absence will be keenly felt by his wife, his daughter and son-in-law; Dusti Neel and Jeremy Jamrog, grandson; Evander Morrow, siblings; Chris Neel, Tony Neel, and Sherrie Carlton, a host of nieces and nephews, extended family, and friends.
The memorial service will be held Monday, March 20 at 2 p.m. at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery. To honor Gary’s life, in lieu of flowers consider making a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project.
