VFW sponsors student essay and art contests

With a new school year underway, Georgetown VFW Post 8587 and its Auxiliary are sponsoring essay and art contests open to students in Georgetown, Jarrell and Florence.The local VFW essay contests are part of larger nationwide competitions, ongoing since 1947.

Navy vet’s wall painting pays tribute at Georgetown VFW

A local artist’s labor of love has turned a plain cinderblock wall at Georgetown’s VFW into a tribute for America’s military servicemembers.

Veterans and patriots join to celebrate American independence

As a part of the 250th celebration of American Independence, a reading of the Declaration of Independence took place in Georgetown, across the U.S. and the world on July 8 – exactly 250 years after the declaration was read in Philadelphia.

Georgetown veteran gets congressional award from John Carter

Navy veteran Frank Espinosa Jr. might be well-known in town for his participation in Georgetown’s veteran groups and The Caring Place, but his community contributions were put in a spotlight in December through Representative John Carter’s Congressional Veteran Commendation Program.
Georgetown High School sophomore Joseph Bustos accepts his $1,000 scholarship prize from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8587 Commander John McLeskey and Victoria Wren, from the Post’s Auxiliary. Joseph’s recorded essay in the VFW’s Voice of Democracy competition was selected over 20 other entries and went on to win second-place at the five-county district level.

“Education,” G.K. Chesterton said, “is the soul of a society, as it passes from one generation to the next.”Chesterton hailed from Victorian England, but 21st century Texans from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8587 might appreciate what he meant.

The Irreverent Warriors group took a 6.1 mile Silkies Hike through Georgetown on Saturday, September 21. The hike began and concluded at VFW Post 8587 on College Street.
