Momentum is building toward this year’s 9/11 National Day of Service. Through acts of community service, Georgetown volunteers and organizations are coming together to honor victims and those affected by the September 11, 2001, tragedy.
This year’s Day of Service in Georgetown takes place Saturday, September 12, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
“It’s been 25 years since 9/11, but we’re also celebrating 250 years of American freedom,” Organizer Nancy Camacho said. “I think with the momentum of the 250th, plus the success of last year’s Day of Service, people want to come back and feel that unity again.”
Volunteers meet up to sign in from 7:30-8:30 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 510 Luther Drive, Georgetown. An introductory program begins at 8:30 a.m. before volunteers disperse to project sites at 9 a.m.
“We have 500 slots for volunteers this year to help us complete 24 service projects for local nonprofits,” Ms. Camacho said.
Nonprofits organizing service projects this year include:
- Uplift Wilco
- BiG
- Georgetown Free Bikes
- Habitat for Humanity
- Head Start
- Rotary
- Simple Sparrow
- The Caring Place
- The Georgetown Project
- The YMCA
- Sleep in Heavenly Peace
- Social Empowerment Texas
- Faith in Action
- Annunciation Maternity Home
- Southwestern University
- Pathways Youth and Family
- Key2Free
- Red Cross
- Williamson County Children’s Advocacy Center
- Noon Lions Club
“The nonprofits are excited, now we need the community to step in,” Ms. Camacho said. “This is great for high school students looking for service hours, Southwestern students who want to get involved in the community, anyone.”
After a few hours of volunteering, participants come together at the church for a community lunch, live music and family-friendly fun until 12:30 p.m.
The Georgetown Fire Department will also help with the festivities and will be bringing a firetruck for the kids.
“Everybody is coming out of the woodwork to help where they can,” Ms. Camacho said.
Sponsors this year include The Georgetown Project, YMCA of Georgetown, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Lexington Financial, Georgetown Church of Nazarene, Congregation Havurah Shalom and Christ Lutheran Church.
