William “Bill” Gayle Sagebiel
William “Bill” Gayle Sagebiel, 92, of La Grange, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 1, 2022.
Bill was born on July 11, 1930, in Temple to the late Clemens Edward and Ruth Lee (Gayle) Sagebiel.
He graduated in 1948 from Temple High School and attended Temple Junior College. Bill then transferred to Texas Tech University in Lubbock, graduating with a B.A. in Economics in 1953.
After college Bill served his country honorably during the Korean conflict in the United States Army. He met the love of his life, Vernell Louise Buchhorn, right before he went overseas. Upon his return from deployment in December of 1955, he knew she was the one and married her on January 1, 1956, in Walburg. The couple was blessed to have shared 66 years of marriage as husband and wife.
Bill and Vernell made their home in Houston where he worked as a Financial Analyst for Gulf Oil. Following the merger of Gulf Oil and Chevron, he retired from Chevron in 1986, with 30 years of dedicated service. In 1989, Bill and Vernell moved to La Grange where he worked for LCRA until his retirement.
He was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church where Bill served on the Board of Elders along with the Board of Stewardship. During their tenure in Houston, Bill also volunteered his time with St. Mark’s Lutheran Church where he held a position on the Board of Finance.
Bill was a devoted husband and father. He held a special place in his heart for his beloved grandchildren. Bill enjoyed spending time with his family at their weekend place outside of Georgetown, Nanny Goat Hill.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Vernell; two daughters: Vanessa Marek and husband, Jason of Bryan; and Stephanie Flinchbaugh and husband, Sean of Corpus Christi; one sister, Hazel Moses of Salado; brother-in-law, Calvin Buchhorn and wife, LaNell of Bartlett; six grandchildren: Mykayla Marek of Denver, Colorado; Alyssa Marek of Bryan; Travis, Collin, Lauren, and Alex Flinchbaugh all of Corpus Christi; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and stepmother, Margaret Sagebiel.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, October 6, from 5 - 7 p.m. with family present at this time to receive friends at Koenig-Belvill Funeral Home & Cremations in La Grange.
Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, October 7, at 10 a.m. at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in La Grange. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. in Temple, at the Greathouse Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church of La Grange, a charity of your choice, or to a local food bank in your community.
