Tom G. Owens, Jr.

November 14, 1932 - December 25, 2022

Tom G. Owens Jr. passed away peacefully just before midnight on December 25, 2022, at Brookdale Senior Living in Denver, Colorado. He was 90 years old.

Born on November 14, 1932, in Fort Worth, Tom’s two great loves were the family he and Judy created together and his beloved Texas Longhorns football team.

Tom was the only child of Olga and Tom Owens, Sr., and had a close extended family in nearby Arlington. Tom ran track at Arlington High School and graduated in 1950. He subsequently attended Arlington Jr. College, where he was involved in ROTC, before graduating from the University of Texas with a degree in business in 1954.

In 1954, Tom and Judy were set up on a blind date by a mutual friend. The couple were married on December 27, 1955, in Amarillo, and soon became the parents of Tom’s namesake, daughter Tomma, born in 1957, and son, Joe, born in 1961. Tom and Judy would have celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on December 27, 2022.

Tom’s professional career took him across the United States before he and Judy retired to Georgetown in 1992. Tom served in the United States Army from 1955-1957, spending time in South Carolina at Fort Benning and attaining the rank of captain. After the Army, Tom and Judy moved to Fort Worth, Texas, where Tom began a 35-year long career with Mobil Oil. He and Judy subsequently moved to Vernon, Texas and then Houston, followed by moves to Oklahoma City in 1965 and Kansas City in 1969. Tom and Judy moved to Chicago in 1980, then finally Fairfax, Virginia, in 1985 before retiring to Georgetown.

In Georgetown, Tom continued to serve his community. As a child, Tom had attended Arlington Methodist Church and he remained active in a number of Methodist churches throughout his lifetime, including serving at First United Methodist Church Georgetown. He was also an involved member of the Rotary Club of Georgetown, where he served as vice-president and then president. Tom continued his professional work in job placement with the Transitions Team and Texas Workforce.

In Georgetown, he and Judy also became season ticket holders for University of Texas football, enjoying many Saturdays at the UT Club attending Longhorns football games.

In June of 2020, Tom and Judy moved to Denver, Colorado, to be near family. Tom continued to share his trademark care and kindness with those around him. Even as his health declined, he still relished visits with his family, a good chocolate milkshake from Chick-fil-a, and wearing the “ball caps” of favorite sports teams or his kids’ and grandkids’ colleges.

Tom is survived by his wife, Judy Owens, daughter, Tomma (Daryl) Edmonds, and son, Joe (Marcia) Owens, as well as four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A private memorial service was held in celebration of Tom’s life on December 28 in Denver, Colorado. He was laid to rest at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.

Donations in Tom’s honor may be made to First United Methodist Church Georgetown.
