Judy W. Owens
Judy W. Owens passed away on May 28, 2023 in Denver, Colorado. She was 90 years old and renowned by those who knew her for her quick wit, caring attitude, and love for her savior Jesus Christ.
Judy was born on December 8th, 1932 in Amarillo, Texas to Silas and Waldine Boozer.
Judy’s family was active in the First Christian Church of Amarillo, and she graduated from Amarillo High School in 1951. Judy enrolled at Amarillo Junior College before attending Texas Christian University. In 1964 she graduated from TCU with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education, as well as a lifelong allegiance to the TCU Horned Frogs.
As Judy was finishing at TCU, a mutual friend set her up on a blind date with Tom Owens. “Tommy,” as Judy called him, proposed soon after their first meeting and the couple was married in Amarillo on December 27, 1955 while Tom was serving in the United States Army. Tomma Lynn, the couple’s daughter, was born in Fort Worth in 1957, and son Joe Coleman was born in Houston in 1961.
In 1965, the family moved to Oklahoma City for Tom’s job with Mobil Oil. When Joe was old enough for preschool, Judy and a friend started a preschool together in a nearby church.
Teaching preschool would become a defining passion of her life. Judy taught hundreds of young students in Oklahoma City, Kansas City, Chicago, Washington DC, and Georgetown, Texas, in over 37 years of teaching.
In 1992, Tom and Judy returned to their Texas roots and retired to Georgetown, Texas. In Georgetown, Judy’s love for interior design, antiquing, sewing, and quilting shined. In addition to teaching preschool, she loved welcoming her growing family with seasonal decorations and delicious treats. Known by her family as “Grandmother,” she often made loved ones laugh with her quick sense of humor and reminded them of her love in countless thoughtful letters and cards.
In June of 2020, Tom and Judy moved to Denver, CO to be near family and made new
friends among staff and residents at Brookdale University Park. She and Tommy celebrated their 90th birthdays together at the end of 2022 before Tommy passed away on Christmas Day, two days shy of their 67th wedding anniversary. Even as she endured considerable physical pain in her last years, she remained uncomplaining, caring, funny, competitive, full of gratitude and faith in her Lord Jesus.
Judy was preceded in death by her her beloved husband Tommy, as well as her twin brother, Joe Boozer, who passed away at birth. Judy is survived by daughter Tomma Edmonds (Daryl) of Denver, CO and son Joe Owens (Marcia) of Mason, OH, as well as four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A private memorial service was held in celebration of Judy’s life on May 31 in Denver. She was laid to rest with her husband, Tom G. Owens, Jr at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.
